Merry Christmas!!! How I Spent My Christmas...

Thursday was Christmas, and for a lot of people, it means spending time with your family. My family and I are one of those people. My family went to jersey to my cousin’s house to spend time with the rest of the family. It’s a tradition that we do every year since me and my cousins were babies. My cousin cooks dinner for us, well everyone gambles and has fun. I think that Christmas is an important time for people to spend time together, if it’s their family, friends, loved ones, etc. It’s just a time when everyone can distress and enjoy time spent with people they love. The presents giving part is also fun, but mostly focused more on children, since it is the children who mostly receive presents. Christmas is a day where you don’t need to work about your job or anything else; it’s that day when you can just live in the moment. Of course, there are three different types of Christmas, the Christmas spent with family, friends, loved ones, etc. (which is the Christmas I had, and which a lot of Americans have), the religious Christmas, where people focus on the religious aspect behind Christmas (which isn’t that popular in America anymore considering that we have people of so many different backgrounds and religions), and finally, the Hallmark Christmas, where people buy presents for each other and give Christmas cards (this is the one Americans mostly celebrate, in combination with a family Christmas.) People like to combine the hallmark Christmas and the family Christmas together. All together, my Christmas was a lot of fun, as it was time spent with my family. I hope that everyone had a merry Christmas, and happy holidays everyone!

Thoughts On The Wal-Mart Stampede

I think that what happened in the Wal-Mart Stampede is ridiculous and entirely Wal-Mart’s fault. An employee died because they did not have enough security to hold back the mob of shoppers. Wal-Mart should know by now which security measures they need to take, considering the fact that Black Friday has been around for a long time. If this was a first time thing, I would understand, but it’s the most famous day for sales, and Wal-Mart should know this by now. The Wal-Mart in Long Island should definitely be sued by the victim’s family, considering their son/husband/family member died because of Wal-Mart. I agree with people saying that the mob is also to blame for the employee’s death, however I don’t think the police can arrest anyone, considering it was a bunch of people’s doing, and not just one or two. The whole mob ran over the employee, not just a couple of people. To blame some people and not the whole group would be ridiculous, and besides, how would you know who to blame? The people in the back of the line shoved the people in the middle, which in turn, shoved the people in the front, so everyone was getting shoved. The whole group of people should all feel guilty though, even if they aren’t going to get arrested for it. In the back of their minds, they should be realizing that they killed a guy in order to save money on a product sold by Wal-Mart.

I also think that the security measures Wal-Mart took were not enough. They made the employees stand in a human chain to block the oncoming mob, which was stupid on their part considering the two thousand people could easily break the human chain. By making the employees form a human chain, they were putting their employees’ lives in danger. Several employees had to jump on top of vending machines to make sure they were not going to be hurt by the oncoming mob. That’s ridiculous, and Wal-Mart needs to take better precautions next time..

Thoughts About Thanksgiving/Black Friday

On Thanksgiving, I went to New Jersey to spend time with my family. There was a lot of food on the table (although the turkey was not the best), and it was fun to spend time with my family. Thanksgiving is a time when people can spend time with their family, and be thankful for everything that they have. It’s a time for people to give back to their community, and have to not worry about anything for a day. I was watching the news, and saw that people were at shelters volunteering their time on Thanksgiving to give food to the poor and/or needy people. I thought that was very nice of them, considering the fact that they are giving up their own time to help others. That’s one way people give back to their community, and they showed that they do not take what they have for granted.

On Black Friday, I went shopping like most people in America. However, unlike most people who woke up early to go shopping, or lined up outside of stores from Thursday night, I went shopping in the afternoon, and found it much easier. There were still a lot of sales, and I was able to buy new clothes without fighting with people over them. The checkout lines were not as long as I predicted they would be, and the sales workers moved quickly. I felt bad for the sales workers though, considering the fact that they had to wake up early in the morning and start working. I heard one employee at Macy’s saying to another “I have been here since four A.M, and I’m ready to go.” I felt bad for them, and wondered what would make them want to work so early in the morning, on one of the busiest shopping days of the year? Were they getting paid more than they would to work on a regular day? Considering the fact that Black Friday follows right after Thanksgiving, I was amazed that the employees could wake up and work on little or no sleep. I personally like black Friday, as it is a day where a lot of stores have huge sales and it’s the time to start buying Christmas presents for people. I think that people who think we should not shop on Black Friday should not complain to other people who do, or make fun of them. Everyone has their own views about Black Friday, and some people like lining up hours before the stores open to make sure they get the best deals. However, I think stores should take security measures to make sure nobody gets hurt, as shown in the Walmart Stampede.

How Do People Live A Good And Meaningful Life? Draft 3

People have different opinions on living a good and meaningful life. Some people’s views on what a good and meaningful life revolves around the media’s viewpoints and some revolve around what they personally think. Some people are fine with judging if other’s people’s lives are meaningful, and some are not. This paper is a combination of what people think makes their lives meaningful, and what our culture tells us makes our lives meaningful.

I think that in order to live a good and meaningful life you need to enjoy life. To me, that is most important thing. If you don’t enjoy your life, then you can’t make it meaningful. I think that what makes your life meaningful is your family and friends. If you have a great family and great friends, then you will have a meaningful life. If you don’t have friends that would care for you, and help you out in any situation, then it is hard to live a good life. The people in your life make your life meaningful, because if you don’t have friends, you’re isolating yourself from the world, which makes your life less meaningless. You don’t have to be going out to parties with your friends or going crazy in order to have a meaningful life, all you need is people who you know will always be there for you. You need to have people who you have that special bond with, that trust that would never get destroyed. You also need to just have fun, and not care about the future too much. Don’t over think everything, instead let whatever happens, happen sometimes. In some cases, such as school, it is important to care about your future, because education also helps you live a good and meaningful life. If you don’t have a good education, it would be hard to get a job, which makes it hard to survive.

I think that in living a meaningful life, you need to know what living a meaningful life is. As soon as you know what living a meaningful life is about, you can live a meaningful life. However, I do not think that you need someone else to tell you how to live a meaningful life. Each person has a separate definition of the terms “living a meaningful life”, and I think that they should all live by their own definitions of it. If you think that you have a meaningful life, then you do. I don’t believe that other people should tell you if you are living a meaningful life or not, because it is not their life, and they don’t have the right to tell you how meaningful your life is. Like I said earlier, to me, living a meaningful life is enjoying life with the people you love, and having fun. There are times when you must be serious, such as when you’re in school or at your job, but there are also times when you should just have fun, such as when you are with your friends or family.

As part of the course, we went out into the streets of Manhattan and interviewed people on their opinions on living a good and meaningful life. Several people walked away from us when asked if they could answer some questions, but most stayed and talked to us. When asked what makes their lives meaningful, several people told us family and friends were the most meaningful parts of their lives, and without them, it would be hard to survive. One of the people I interviewed was my mother, and when asked what the most meaningful part of her life was, she said, “Family is the most meaningful part of my life because I love my kids, and without then I wouldn’t be able to live.” When I talked to the strangers on the street, an older male said “family is meaningful to him because he sees them every day and they are an important part of his life.”

When asked what makes a meaningless life, people named drama, catty people, and money, to name a few. One of the strangers, a female, said “catty people are meaningless, and so is nonsense drama that doesn’t mean anything.” A male stranger also agreed, saying “the most meaningless part is being caught up in unnecessary drama, and there is no point on focusing on it.” Another male said that you don't need money to live a meaningful life, stating “money messes up our system and we don’t need it to live a meaningful life.”

In today's society, there are a lot of opinions about living a meaningful life. People get their ideas about living meaningful life from corporate culture. Corporate culture is when a corporation is making money by selling you stuff that changes your lives (such as clothes, hair products, cars). It's also when someone is getting money for pouring information in your mind (such as magazines and books). Wherever we look, corporate culture is around us. Corporate culture comes up in our daily discussions with friends/family/teachers/etc. even if we do not realize it. One example of how corporate culture tell us how to live is when you look at a magazine, such as Vogue, People, and Glamour, you see ads for clothes and cars, and pictures of celebrities with their friends, family, special someone, or shopping. These magazines are telling us that in order to live a meaningful life; you must have nice clothes, money, love, friends and family. According to corporate culture, in order to live a meaningful life, you need to have materialistic things.

Corporate culture also tells us men will always dominate over women. There are very few movies or TV shows in the world where women are in power. In movies such as the James Bond movies, there is always a Bond girl, and she always falls for him. It doesn’t matter that she is a strong character; she always ends up with James Bond. In the movie, Not Another Teen Movie, the main character, Jake Wyler, gives a makeover to the nerdy girl, Janey Briggs, and then they end up together. In Not Another Teen Movie, Jake ends up as the hero of the story, by saving Janey from her nerdyness, and they end up together in the end. In most movies that corporate culture makes, the guy is always the dominate character, he’s always the hero. There aren’t a lot of movies where the female is the dominate character, and where she is a hero without the help of a male character.

Another thing that corporate culture tells us about living a meaningful life is that you should spend time with family and friends on holidays. On Thanksgiving, corporate culture tells us that everyone should be with their family and friends, and having a good time while stuffing their faces with turkey, apple pie, mash potato, etc. Corporate culture also tells us that we should think about what we are thankful for, and make sure everyone shares what they are thankful for. On Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, corporate culture tells us that we should wake up early in the morning to go shopping for Christmas specials. Stores open early, and have a lot of sales. Corporate culture tells us that we should “shop ‘til we drop”, and buy Christmas presents for people, since everything is reduced from its normal price. I went shopping on Black Friday this year, and found it crazy. There were people rushing all over the place to buy stuff before 1 PM (the ending time for major sales). The sales workers have been working since early into the morning, and people have been shopping since about 5 AM. I did not wake up early to go shopping, and yet I got some good deals on clothes. I find that shopping on Black Friday is hectic, yet worth it in the end.

For homework, we analyzed a music video. There were three choices, Lipgloss by Lil’ Mama, All you need is love by the Beatles, and Good Life by Kanye West. The music video I chose to analyze was All you need is love by the Beatles. In this video, the song is saying that in order to have a good life, all you need is love. You don’t need to have materialistic things, such as designer clothes or huge houses, or a lot of money, all you need in life is love. It can be love from your family, friends, or someone special in your life. The images in this video support the theme of the song because in the video, the Beatles are surrounded by people who are most likely their family members, friends, or special people in their lives. There are also people walking around the room that the Beatles are in wearing signs that say something about love in them, which also is the point of the video.

Also for homework, we had to watch another video and read somebody else’s analysis of that video. The video I chose to watch was Lipgloss by Lil’ Mama. I read Henry’s, Snyder’s, and Jace’s analysis of this video. For Henry’s analysis, I wrote “Henry,
I like your analysis of the video, because I wouldn't think that that is what the video is portraying. But after reading your analysis, I realize that what you are saying is correct. You don’t know anything about Lil' Mama, accept the fact that she has pretty lipgloss and that makes everyone like her.” For Andy’s analysis, I wrote “Andy, I think that your analysis of the video was correct and helped change my mind of the meaning of the video. At first, I didn’t know exactly what the meaning was behind the video, but after reading your analysis and evidence to back your analysis up, I realized that what you are saying is correct. Because Lil Mama has the lip gloss in her hand, she is cool and popular.” For Jace’s analysis, I wrote “Jace, I agree with your analysis of the video. Because she has lip gloss on, she is now cool. I like how you used the lyrics to back up your analysis, and how you noticed that there are only good looking people in the video. I didn't notice that at first, but after reading your analysis I realized that you were right.”

One thing that corporate culture doesn't tell us about living a meaningful life is that you need to be religious. Corporations don't put out ads focusing on religion and God, and no one ever focuses campaigns based on religion. One reason for this might be because since there are so many religions, to just focus on one would hurt a campaign or ad. For example, if Apple made an ad about how Jewish people use iPods, and every Jewish person should own one, then that ad would only target Jewish people, and other people of different religions might not want to be a iPod, because it is not targeting them. By targeting only one group of people, corporations are narrowing down their sales, and people won't buy their products as much.

Reflection On The 2008 Election

Yesterday was the 2008 election, and the two canidates were John McCain and Barack Obama. The person that I thought was going to win was Obama, and he did win. I think that Obama is going to be a good president who will try and help America's economy. I don't think that the change will happen immediately, as it is hard to change America's current state of crisis, but between McCain and Obama, I think Obama can help America. He is ready to promote change in America, and help the minorities, which is a change for us. As the 44th president, I think President Barack Obama will make a impact on America as we know it, for better or worse.
I also don't think that people should keep complaining that McCain didn't win. The election is over, and there is no point in complaining anymore. John McCain did not win, and some people need to deal with it. Complaining and acting like babies about it is not going to change anything because you can not turn back time, even though people would like to. Barack Obama is going to be our president for the next four years, and unless you plan to move out of the country, you need to learn to deal with it. Americans dealt wit George W. Bush for 8 years, so I find it possible for republicans to deal wit President Obama for the next four years. There is always going to be a winner and a loser in a fight/race, and in this case, Obama was the winner and McCain was the loser. As much as some people hate that fact, they need to learn to deal. Not everything is going to go their way.

How Do People Live A Good And Meaningful Life? Draft

Introduction
People have different opinions on living a good and meaningful life. Some people’s views on what a good and meaningful life revolves around the media’s viewpoints and some revolve around what they personally think. Some people are fine with judging if other’s people’s lives are meaningful, and some are not. Assigment Five-Analyzing Other People's Views On The Videos

This is for the video Lipgloss.

i like ur analysis of the video, because i wouldn't think that that is what the video is portraying. but after reading your analysis, i realize that what you are saying is correct. you dont know anything about Lil' Mama, accept the fact that she has pretty lipgloss and that makes everyone like her. good point =)

Messages on the Good & Meaningful Life from Popular Culture

The video watched was All You Need Is Love by The Beatles

1.The song is saying that in order to have a good life, all you need is love. You just need to have someone who loves you, and who you love back. You don’t need to have materialistic things, such as designer clothes or huge houses, or a lot of money, all you need in life is love. It can be love from your family, friends, or someone special in your life.
2.The lyrics that speak to this perspective are
“All you need is love.
All you need is love.
All you need is love, love.
Love is all you need.”
They speak to this perspective because they are summing up the whole idea of the song. Instead of making the song’s message complicated to understand, the line “all you need is love” is repeated throughout the whole song to help people understand that love is all you need to have a good life.
3.The images in this video support the theme of the song because in the video, the Beatles are surrounded by people who are most likely their family members, friends, or special people in their lives. There are also people walking around the room that the Beatles are in wearing signs that say something about love in them, which also is the point of the video.
4.Something interesting that I notice about this video is during the whole video, it only focuses on the Beatles and the people in this one room, and they are wearing the same outfits throughout the whole video. In most music videos, the singers change outfits in every different scene, or they’re moving around into different rooms. In this video, the people aren’t moving around into different rooms or changing outfits.

Assignment Three-What Do People Around You Say About Living Meaningfully?

I interviewed eleven people, my mother, my sister, and eleven strangers. This is what they said about living life meaningfully, what their definition of wisdom is, and if they think that they are wise.
Seven out of the eleven people I interviewed said that family was the most meaningful things in their lives. My mother, my eleven-year-old sister, five strangers I talked to on the street said that family is the most meaningful part of their life. My mother said, “Family is the most meaningful part of my life because I love my kids, and without then I wouldn’t be able to live.” Also agreeing with my mother, my sister said that family is the most meaningful part of her life because “I love and care for my family, and they do the same with me”. Five strangers also agreed two were older males; one was a lady walking her dog, and two students from school of the future (one seventh grader and who one graduated last year). One of the older males I interviewed said “family is meaningful to him because he sees them every day and they are an important part of his life.” The lady with the dog agreed that family is the most meaningful part of her life, and said that “I have a good family, and they are very meaningful to me.” Seven out of the eleven people I interviewed said that family was the most meaningful thing in their life.

Five out of the eleven people I interviewed also said, along with family, friends were one of the most meaningful things in the life. My mother, my sister, the lady walking the dog, and seventh grade student, and the student who graduated from school of the future last year said that friends were one of the most meaningful parts of their lives. My mother said that “friends are meaningful to me because they are always there for me and they help me out”, while my sister agreeing to what my mother said, added “friends are important because they love me and I love them and they’re always there for me.” The seventh grade student and my sister also said something in common, which is that friends are “people to hang out with” and “they’re always there for you.” The lady with the dog and my mother both agreed that they had “good friends, who were there when I need them the most.”

When asked what the definition of a meaningful life was, two people (Jace and a male stranger on the street) agreed that we make our lives meaningful. Jace said “we make things meaningful”, and the stranger on the street agreed with this statement by saying “we make our lives meaningful, it’s what we do and who we are around that make our lives meaningful.”

Two out of the eleven people I interviewed said that drama and catty/shallow people were a meaningless part of their life. The lady walking the dog said “catty people are meaningless, and so is nonsense drama that doesn’t mean anything.” A male stranger also agreed, saying “the most meaningless part is being caught up in unnecessary drama, and there is no point on focusing on it.” One thing that I thought was a really good point was when the student who graduated from school of the future last year said money was the most meaningless part of his life. He said “money messes up our system and we don’t need it to live a meaningful life.” I think that he made a good point.

Five out of the eleven people I interviewed said that wisdom is defined by the experiences you have, and the knowledge you have. One male stranger I interviewed said “wisdom is a combination of practical knowledge, experience, and intellectual knowledge.” Agreeing with this, the student who graduated from school of the future last year said “wisdom comes from experience, and the older you are, the wiser you are.” The lady walking the dog also agreed with wisdom being based on experience, and said “the more you experience, the more you gain, which makes you wiser.” One definition of wisdom I thought was really thought out and smart was when our school nurse said “wisdom is thinking before you make a reaction, or when you review what you do before you act on it.” I thought that was a really good point.

Five out of the eleven people I interviewed also said they weren’t wise yet, because the older you are, the wiser you get, while two out of the eleven people I interviewed said they were wise already. One of them was the seventh grade student, who said he was wise “because he was having fun in his life, but he didn’t know what the definition of wise was.” The other person, an older male stranger, said he thinks he’s wise because “he’s old, he has an education, his employment and jobs, and his interest in other people.”
In conclusion, the people I interviewed thought that family and friends were the most meaningful part of their life. They also thought that wisdom is defined by your knowledge and experience, and that the older you are, the wiser you are.

(if they are your dogs of course)
-Rachel

first i want to say that you have a awesome song (the T.I one) playing in the backround. i also like how halfway through the video you switched the song. lastly, i like how you put basketball in your video because i know that it is meaningful to you. great video!
-Rachel

Julie!
i love your video, the song is awesome, and i like how you have a variation of videos and pictures in your video, which is awesome because most videos just have pictures in them. i also like how you put your friends and family in your video, because that shows me that they are menaingul to you.
-Rachel

here are my three insights that i have learned from watching other people's videos:
1.a lot of people put their fmaily and friends in their video because they are meaningful to them, which i thought was cool because now i know that we all have the same idea of what is meaningful in our lives.
2.a lot of people know hot to do special effects and animations in their videos, which is awesome because the video looks fantastic anjd it's really fun to watch.
3.people also find their pets meanignful, which i think is really important because animals are just like humans, and people should care more for animals if they don't already.

My Meaningful Video

1. I have decided to include my pictures of my friends, family, my cat, school, and artists/bands I like in my video.
2. I chose not to include meaningless pictures in my video, preferring to stick to things that are meaningful to me.
3. I would have liked to include more pictures of my family, but unfortunately I was having a problem with my camera so I couldn't upload anymore pictures of them.
4. I used two questions to decide if something was meaningful to me the question, how important was that subject to my life. I asked myself the question, would I be able to live without it? For example, I asked myself how important my family and friends were to me, and decided that they were very important to me because I would not be able to survive without them in my life. Those are the questions I based my decisions about what to put in my video on.
5. The pattern that I find in things that I find meaningful is is that they mostly include people. For example, my friends and family are both meaningful to me, and they are all people. People are meaningful to me because I can relate to them, because they have emotions just like me. It’s harder to relate to animals or non-living objects.
6.I think that it is a honest description of my life, because it shows me in school , hanging out with my friends, spending time with my family and cat, and listening to music, which is all things that I do almost every day. I think that my life in interesting and special to me, but I don't know what others think of it, hopefully they would agree with me.
7. I think my life does seem meaningful from an outside perspective, because I think that most people find their friends and family meaningful, and my friends and family are a part of my video. It is also meaningful from an inside perspective because it matters to me and everybody close to me.
8. The question that I have about living a meaningful life is: Why do people question if they have a meaningful life or not? Shouldn't they just take the life they have and most the best out of it, instead of questioning its importance?

Just to let you know, the video takes a while to load.
